Lessons
from ActorFest
This
is Dave Levine. I met Dave a couple of weeks ago at ActorFest
West in LA. Great headshot, yes?
I
have no doubt that Dave's going to be a success. Maybe not
a star, but he'll make a more than comfortable living as an
actor, and I'm betting sooner than later.
The
reason I have no doubt is that he has no doubt. He's clear
on where he wants to be, how he's going to get there, and
what he has to offer.
Why
is this clarity and confidence something every actor must
develop if they want to be successful in the industry?
1.
Knowing where you're going and how you'll get there breeds
faith and easy commitment. It empowers you to enjoy seeking
opportunities without struggle, anxiety, or questioning yourself.
2.
Your confidence instills confidence in others. Walk into an
audition knowing you're the right person for the role (I mean
really knowing) and you will make it a lot easier for the
CD to agree with you. You're getting your customers to trust
you.
3.
Confidence is essential for good acting. Even , the poster child for insecurities and anxiety developed
his whole brand by exploiting them. In fact he was so confident
in his eccentric "I'm a nothing" schtick that he
ended up making a mint on it.
How
does one develop that confidence?
The
answer is as varied as the actors striving for it. It's a
matter of calling up and owning your unique qualities - who
you really are underneath it all.
And
for that, I recommend you do a sample coaching session with
me. It's fr*ee, fun, and there's no ob*ligation. Hit reply
now and schedule it!
New
Seminars
I'm
a strong believer in putting an intention for what you want
out into the universe and letting it come back to you. It's
not magic, it's you creating and shaping the world around
you.
So
after a year of publishing The Actor's Success! e-Zine, it's
my turn to ask for help.
Over
the last few years running
The Actor's Success!, I've had the pleasure of leading seminars
and workshops at Actors Theatre of Louisville and in NYC. Now I'm hungry for more.
To
that end, I'm offering three highly interactive seminars for
actors who feel stuck or otherwise not living out their dreams:
A
Career Called Desire ~ in which actors: Focus
on their deepest desires for a successful acting career Write
a vision story for their ideal lives & careers
Set SMART goals that will make the vision a reality
The
Confidence Factor ~ in which actors:
Experience
themselves at their most confident and empowered
Learn how to keep that feeling alive
Commit to a thrilling action that will cement that confidence
The Empowered Lens ~ in which actors:
Understand
the lens through which they see their careers and themselves
Try on several other possible lenses
Choose a lens that will empower them to make powerful moves
forward
The
seminars provided by The Actor’s Success! are specifically
designed to not only excite and empower, but also root the
learning in the actor’s mind and body, by having them
commit to creating their own experience.
Now
I'm looking for organizations that will bring me in to lead
these. If you or someone you know can help make this happen,
please e-mail me [robin@robinjones.biz]
or call me on 502.896.2870. It will help me help hundreds
of actors move forward with their lives and careers.
Feature
Article: Funding Your Acting Habit
Do
you struggle with the balance between needing to make enough
money to live while getting auditions and roles that pay?
You're not alone; it's a common challenge for actors.
Nothing's
more frustrating than missing real opportunities to drive
your acting career forward, while having to satisfy petty
needs, such as eating and making rent.
Wouldn't
it be great if you could name your own income, set your own
hours, and have the flexibility to be everywhere you need
to be to make things happen?
Why
not become your own bo.ss?
It
may seem pretty far-fetched at first glance, but take a second
glance and it may get nearer-fetched. You're already in business
for yourself, so it's just good practice for your marketing
skills, setting & achieving goals, and investing yourself
in something you really care about.
And
you have an edge, in that you're already in the business of
creativity, innovation, and thinking outside the box. Any
business guru will agree, these are some of the most important
qualities for any business owner.
If
you can see every failure as a success, there's nothing that
can stand in your way.
Here
are a few ideas:
Love
animals? Recreate yourself as a dog-walker or pet-sitter.
Prove that you'll take the best care of your clients' pets,
and you can make a tidy sum with upscale clients.
Another
actress friend financed her acting habit for a long time by
doing skin care and waxing for wealthy women. Because it gave
her the flexibility to audition and travel, she found paying
acting work much quicker than she would have in a corporate
or serving posiition. And she was able to leave it behind
once she make the leap to full-time consistent acting work.
Or
take Scott Baker, one of my clients in Atlanta. Scott trains
people to own and operate their own business using sweat equity
instead of bank loans. Using exclusive Swiss skin care and
healthcare products, his growing success is resulting from
helping others reach their dreams. Pretty sweet. Find him
on the web at .
Become
a life coach. It's still a young profession, and there's nothing
better than helping people make their dreams a reality. The
initial training is affordable, and qualifies you to get right
to it. We work over the phone, so you can do it from anywhere.
Check
out Sheila Kelley's brainchild, fitness classes she calls
:
"[it] came to life after I accidentally discovered my
sexual power and a fit body while researching and preparing
for a role in the film 'Dancing at the Blue Iguana.' My life
was changed forever. And now I want to share this extraordinary
journey with other women."
She
now has studios in LA and San Francisco, employs over 20 teachers,
and still gets to pursue a very successful acting career.
It's pretty clear this is a labor of love for her, and a very
lucrative one that continues steady growth.
Look,
you're already an entrepreneur anyway, so you might as well
do it all the time. Start a little bit at a time, pursue growth,
and you'll be surprised how quickly you find the freedom and
flexibility to do everything you want to do.
Attached
is a worksheet to help you come up with some ideas for your
own business that fit your values and personality. It's a
PDF file, so you may need to go to
to download the reader for fr*ee.
Summertime
Blues?
Throw
into your blender:
a
banana (peel it first)
2 peaches
a mango (essential)
5 strawberries
1 cup plain yogurt
a handful of ice
1 cup juice
Blend
it up for a minute, pour into a wide-mouth glass, and then
sit down with your smoothie. Admire it. Love it. Become the
smoothie. And then slowly, savoring each moment, drink it.
Focus all your attention on the sweet turning to sour, on
the texture as it slides down your throat, on the coolness
of the glass in your hand. Heaven.
And
that, my friends, is the secret to happiness. If you've found
a better one, please let
me know.
